' From Ibstock, Buxton followed the unlikely route to pop glory of studying engineering at Exeter University, followed by a suit-and-tie job in London doing promotional work for Tupperware. The sound would be very emotive, swelling all round the room. 'I used to sit at the piano and play just a few chords that I really liked,' he says, 'over and over with the sustain pedal down. A former church chorister and violinist (Grade V), he is the son of a vicar from Ibstock in Leicestershire who vetoed him watching Top of the Pops as a boy on the grounds that it wasn't good for his 'mental development'. 'So now there are 500 cow statues spread around the city. 'They had a great fire there in the 1870s which is supposed to have been started by a cow.' 'Er, yes,' he says, 'but the best bit was the cows. 'I was glad to get home - I've never been away for three weeks before. 'It was pretty hectic,' says Ratcliffe, who has the legend 'Chicago' splashed across his shirt, 'but the club promoters and crowds there are worth travelling to see - real characters.'
